strengthening learning experience for filipino students

Designing a course management software that supports an offline feature for students in the Philippines

OVERVIEW

Offlearn is a customizable and interactive course management system that allows students and instructors in the Philippines to manage grades and course materials while offering course tools designed for efficiency and convenience.

It also supports a feature that allows students to submit assignments on time, send a message to their instructor, and download course materials while offline. It’s designed to help Filipino students keep up with their assignments without having to worry about missing important deadlines due to a poor connection.

problem

How can we design and develop a course management system that allows students and instructors in the Philippines to manage grades and course materials online in an efficient and convenient way?

  • Students and instructors in economically challenged areas with limited funding and resources in the Philippines

  • With this project, I hope to create a course management system that can be widely adopted across schools in the Philippines, reducing the educational achievement gap between students with stable Internet access and students with limited or no Internet access.

INSPIRATION

The concept for Offlearn was inspired by Canvas and Blackboard, two major web-based learning management systems that students and instructors use in schools worldwide.

DESIGN PROCESS

💡 SOLUTION

The simplistic design prioritizes ease of use, featuring a customizable dashboard with a progress bar for efficient assignment tracking. The system supports limited offline functionality, allowing tasks such as assignment submission, messaging, and accessing course materials offline, with updates syncing upon reconnection to wifi.

MAINTAINING A CLEAR HIERARCHY

Students can easily find the information they need for their courses. The dashboard also allows students to keep track of important tasks and deadlines.

CUSTOMIZABILITY

Offer a new level of personalization across Offlearn to enhance the student’s productivity.

SUPPORTING AN OFFLINE FEATURE

Allow students to submit their assignments on time even without wifi connection. Check mark will be grayed out when an assignment has been successfully submitted while offline.

FAMILIARITY

The software is intuitive for students to use due to its similar look and feel to other services like Canvas.

HIGH-FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

REFLECTION

In making Offlearn, I learned that a successful course management software should focus on improving upon the design of existing software that most students would be familiar with such as Canvas or Blackboard, while pioneering new features that would make Offlearn stand out from the competition. I hope to see Offlearn become universally adopted across schools in the Philippines, but the concept of being able to stay on track in school even without Internet access could benefit students with fewer resources all across the globe.
